The mitral valve is associated with premature beats. Examples include mitral stenosis, severe mitral regurgitation, and mitral valve prolapse.
Premature beats are when cardiomyocytes outside of the heart’s normal conduction system specialize into ectopic pacing points that send electrical impulses, causing the heart to undergo preterm contractions. These ectopic pacing points are often found in the ventricular myocardium (i.e., premature ventricular contractions).
There are many factors that can cause premature beats. Coronary artery disease, hyperthyroidism, heart failure, mitral valve prolapse, mitral valve stenosis, and mitral regurgitation may induce premature beats.
Premature beats include functional premature beats and pathologic premature beats, i.e., healthy people may also have premature beats occasionally, even if it is pathologic premature beats, early detection, active control and treatment will not cause serious consequences, so patients with premature beats do not need to be too worried.
If you suspect mitral valve pathology or premature beats, please consult a doctor as soon as possible for early control to protect your health.
