Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery Precautions

1. Before surgery, the child should have fasting blood sampling for liver function, blood routine, coagulation function, urine routine, chest X-ray, ECG, etc. If there are any problems, they should be cured before surgery.

2. The child should have no symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection such as fever, cough and runny nose before the surgery, and try to exclude the influence of various unfavorable factors on the surgery.

3. Children with cleft lip and palate should be accustomed to spoon or dropper feeding before surgery to avoid crying due to discomfort after surgery, which may affect feeding and wound healing.

4.After cleft lip and palate surgery, children should be encouraged to eat liquid food and drink more water to ensure adequate nutrition. Oral fluids are usually given after surgery, and all intake should be ensured three times a day.

5.One week after surgery is a critical period for wound healing, so special attention should be paid to feeding, warmth and wound cleaning of the child; avoid crying, colds, fever, diarrhea and any other adverse effects on the wound.

6.After cleft lip and palate surgery, the child should be fed with a spoon or dropper, and should not be allowed to suck on a nipple or bottle, nor should he or she suck on liquid food with a straw.

7.After surgery, the child should be prevented from scratching the wound with his hands or sticking his hands into the mouth. Use a small splint to brake both upper limbs if necessary.

8.After the cleft lip repair, the nurse should clean the wound with sterile cotton swabs daily to remove blood scabs and dirt and keep the area clean. Parents should not wipe the wound themselves.

9.Children with cleft palate should be fed with a full liquid diet in the early postoperative period, and hot, hard or crumbly food is forbidden; too much sugar should not be put into the liquid diet, and some salty liquid food should be served with it.

10, 3 weeks after cleft palate surgery can start to eat thin semi-liquid food, and gradually increase according to the recovery; after 6-8 weeks can start to eat ordinary food, but still should pay attention to avoid damage to the wound by too hard food.

11.Incontamination of the mouth may cause erosion and perforation of the wound. After eating, rinse the mouth with water, let the child open the mouth and check the erosion and perforation, and if there is any food residue, continue to rinse it off, generally the wound will heal in 1~2 months.

12, cleft lip repair 6-7 days after the removal of stitches, cleft palate repair 5-7 days after the removal of the intraoral relaxation incision filled with gauze. The sutures in the palate need not be removed in the early postoperative period.

13.Patients with cleft palate should continue to pay attention to their diet after discharge, and should not shout or pick their nasal and oral cavities with their fingers in the early stage. 2-3 months later, voice training can be started.

14.In order to prevent scar growth, topical scar inhibiting drugs, such as skin health cream, scar enemy, etc., can be used after cleft lip repair as prescribed by the doctor.
