Avoiding myopia starts with prevention

Myopia is the most prevalent refractive problem in the world today, and nearly one-third of the world’s population in China suffers from myopia, especially among adolescents who are burdened with heavy school work. Myopia can cause loss of distance vision in the naked eye, causing many inconveniences in work, study and life, and limiting schooling and employment. High myopia, especially super high myopia, not only causes loss of distance vision, but its complications can often cause serious visual impairment, making it difficult to achieve satisfactory results even with refractive surgery. Avoiding myopia starts with prevention. The causes of myopia are complex and are broadly divided into congenital and acquired: congenital factors are related to genetics, while acquired factors are related to social, environmental, and eye habits. Myopia is a major and rapid development in adolescence, so prevention of myopia should start at a young age and be prevented before it happens. 1, reduce the burden of eye use: parents expect too much from their children, enrolling them in various extracurricular tuition or special learning, adding many unreasonable extracurricular burdens, allowing children’s eyes to take on too much work in the process of development, which leads to the occurrence of myopia. So let the children go, let the children have some more play time, relatively relieved a little easier, then the children’s eyes will not be so hard, myopia will not come too soon too fast. 2, learning environment to pay attention to: the eye is a sophisticated camera, not enough light natural “photo” is not clear. So a good lighting environment in learning is very important. 8-15 watt fluorescent lamps or 25-40 watt light bulbs are appropriate, light should come from the left side in front of the top, the lamp distance from the desk in 50-67 cm is appropriate. It is also best to ask teachers to help on this issue, the board font is larger, the handwriting is clearer, the seating of students is reasonable (preferably can be rotated regularly), give the children less homework, then the myopic students will not be so many. 3, eye habits should be correct: correct eye habits for the prevention of myopia is also crucial. Sit upright with your eyes 1 foot away from the book and write with your hand about 1 inch away from the tip of the pen. Take a 15-minute break from reading for one hour, and do not lie down or lie on the table to read. TV time should not be too long during the appropriate rest, eyes from the screen distance is 5 times the diagonal of the TV screen is appropriate. Reduce the use of computer time, pay special attention to those smaller and more advanced electronic products (tablet computers, e-books, PSP and fully functional cell phones) as far as possible to reduce the use of children. 4, living habits and eating habits are also important: let children actively participate in physical exercise, enhance physical fitness, improve the regulation of the eye muscle, to achieve a combination of work and rest, near and far. Consciously do eye exercises to eliminate the fatigue of the eye muscle part. Diet should have both vegetables and fruits rich in vitamins and trace elements, and a certain amount of sugar, protein and fat, such as meat, eggs and milk, because myopia in adolescents is related to sugar, protein, calcium intake and lack of certain trace elements in the body (such as chromium, zinc, copper, etc.), as well as vitamin A and vitamin C. It is always important to have a balanced diet yo. The prevention of myopia is a long-term effort. To prevent myopia, it is important to start at a young age, to prevent it before it happens, and not to think about myopia prevention only after you have developed myopia.
