Patients are generally able to tell very clearly whether they have tinnitus on the left side or the right side. Only a very small number of patients will have difficulty identifying the exact location, but most patients can generally identify it. From the doctor’s perspective, since tinnitus is not an isolated symptom, but may be accompanied by deafness and vertigo, the doctor can find out the location of the lesion by taking a medical history and performing specialized tests, such as audiological evaluation and vestibular function tests. Most patients can tell the doctor exactly which side of the ear the tinnitus is on, and the doctor should be aware of this when taking a medical history. In addition, there are some patients who have cranial tinnitus and therefore cannot distinguish between sides.
