TMJ patients have a young age of onset and many have a habit of drinking coffee or caffeinated beverages, including tea and tea beverages. Caffeine has a good excitatory effect on the nerves, which can refresh the mind and improve the efficiency of mental work. However, excessive caffeine intake can increase muscle tension and increase the sensitivity of trigger points in otherwise painful muscles, aggravating the patient’s pain symptoms. Recent studies have also found that consuming more than 2 carbonated beverages per day can also increase the sensitivity of trigger points within the muscles, making the already painful muscles more sensitive. So how much is the right amount to drink? Studies have observed that drinking one cup of coffee or one carbonated beverage per day does not aggravate symptoms in TMJ patients. For patients who consume large amounts of coffee drinks and carbonated beverages over a long period of time, they need to gradually reduce their intake and change their eating habits.
