IVF technology is broadly divided into three generations. The first generation is the conventional in vitro fertilization technique, which is mainly used for obstruction of the female partner’s fallopian tubes, inflammation, endometriosis, etc. It is mainly used to treat infertility due to pelvic and tubal factors. The second generation is the single sperm cytoplasm technique (ICSI), which is mainly applicable to infertility caused by severe oligo- and hypospermia in the male partner. The third generation is preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), which is mainly used for patients with genetic disorders that require screening of embryos with disease-causing genes for eugenic purposes. Therefore different types of IVF techniques are suitable for different populations and have different indications.
