Why is a follow-up visit necessary after thyroid eye surgery?

Patients with thyroid eye disease can generally resolve their problems during the stable phase of the disease through three types of surgery: orbital decompression surgery, diplopia correction, and upper lid recession surgery. Strictly speaking, patients who have undergone surgery should come for regular review for the following reasons: 1) timely detection by the surgeon of possible post-surgical adhesions, suture dislodgement, bleeding and potential infection; 2) timely instruction of the patient in functional exercises, as functional exercises for the eyelids and eyeballs are necessary for the improvement of post-surgical results in patients with hyperthyroidism proptosis; and 3) timely guidance for the next step of treatment. The general time for review should be after discharge: one week, one month, three months, six months and one year.
