Frequently asked questions about keratomileusis

1.What are keratoplasty lenses? Keratomileusis is a kind of rigid corneal contact lens made of highly breathable material, which is mainly worn during sleep to control the growth of the eye axis through the shaping of the lens on the cornea, so that you can get up with clear vision and never need to wear glasses during the day and achieve the effect of controlling the development of myopia. Corneal shaping takes a process, usually 2-3 days, and most of them can achieve stable vision within 1 week, so they need to be worn every night. Currently, keratoplasty is an internationally recognized means of controlling the development of myopia, and most children can effectively control the development of myopia after wearing them, but keratoplasty is not a panacea and a permanent solution, after using keratoplasty you should still adhere to scientific eye use and increase outdoor activities. 2. Are keratoplasty lenses the same as OK lenses, are they unsafe and likely to cause eye damage? The full name of the keratoplasty lens is Orthokeratology, and its abbreviation is what we call OK lens. However, unlike the OK lenses we used to use, the current lenses are made of a more oxygen permeable material and a lot of clinical experience has shown that keratoplasty is very safe and reliable. The fitting of keratoplasty lenses must be carried out in a regular hospital, and each lens is subjected to a very strict screening process before it is worn, so that only eligible people can be fitted. In addition, after a successful trial, but also to wear the relevant knowledge to explain, as long as you can carefully follow, regular review, corneal plastic lens is very safe. 3.Is the success rate of keratoconus high? The fitting of keratoplasty lenses needs to follow a strict procedure and to achieve results only for the adapted population. According to the US FDA statistics, 65% of people can get more than 1.0 vision, and more than 90% of people can achieve more than 0.5 (this vision has no effect on daily life and driving). 4.What kind of people can wear keratoconus? Generally speaking, more than 6 years old, myopia in -1.00-6.50D, myopic astigmatism: cis-rational astigmatism ≤ -1.75D, retro-rational astigmatism ≤ -1.50D, foreign also applied to the farsighted phakic population, the current maximum age of 67 years old, for the correction of hyperopia. For the following groups of people are not recommended to wear: (1) refractive state a myopic astigmatism is not in the fitting range; b have obvious intraocular astigmatism, refraction is not ortho-optic spherical to column lens ratio less than 2 caution to consider; c corneal curvature is flatter, K value ≥ 46.00 or ≤ 39.50D is often poor fitting; d intraocular pressure ≤ 10 or ≥ 20mmHg, caution to wear; (2) any acute eye chronic inflammation, dry eye, fundus lesions, etc., the pupil is large, especially the night pupil is not suitable for wearing; (3) the whole body with acute and chronic sinusitis, severe diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, etc., for those who have pollen, perfume, cosmetic allergies, may be allergic conjunctivitis to contact lens care solution. 5. Are keratoplasty lenses comfortable to wear? Some parents worry that the lenses of keratoplasty lenses are very hard, they say that the eyes do not rub sand, so hard lenses will not be very uncomfortable. Although the lens of the keratoplasty lens is made of polymer material hard contact lenses, but it has no effect on the eyes, at first, especially when trying to wear may have irritated tears symptoms, this is a normal reaction, generally 20 minutes later there will not be any feeling, and the keratoplasty lens is worn when sleeping, will not produce any feeling for the wearer. 6.How often do I have to review my keratoplasty lenses after a successful trial? For the wearer who has just been successfully fitted, we generally require a review the next day, 1 week, 1 month and 3 months. After that, if the vision is stable and there are no special circumstances, you can have a review in 3-6 months. Overseas, for very experienced wearers who are wearing their second or more lenses, they are often reviewed once a year. 7.How long can I use keratoconus lenses? The life span of a keratoplasty lens is generally 2 years, beyond which it must be replaced with a new lens. There are also 1 year, 1.5 years to replace. This depends on the wearer’s refractive error and how well they take care of their lenses. The main reasons for lens replacement are breakage, serious contamination of the lenses, and failure to achieve good correction. Therefore, it is important to bring the lenses to each review to have them checked by a professional physician to see if they are suitable and to dissect them if necessary. 8.Is there a requirement for sleeping time for keratoconus? Generally speaking, in order to achieve a good correction effect, it is best to ensure about 8 hours of sleep every night, if the time is not enough, you can consider wearing them 1 hour before bedtime, will also achieve good correction effect. Some parents worry about the weekend will not sleep too long to have an impact, this is no problem, once in a while 10-11 hours of sleep is not a problem. 9. Are keratoconus lenses expensive? Compared to general contact lenses, keratoplasty lenses are more expensive. They also require regular checkups at the hospital after wearing them, which will have some additional costs. There will not be much difference from place to place, so it is recommended to consult with your local medical institution before trying them on.
