What are the pre-operative considerations for cleft lip and palate surgery?

  Cleft palate is more common and can occur alone or in conjunction with cleft lip. If you choose to have your child undergo cleft lip and palate surgery, there are many things to be aware of, and it is important to understand the preoperative preparations thoroughly to ensure that the risks of the surgery are minimized. Don’t think that there is no risk involved in this surgery, this is not true. So, what are the pre-operative considerations for cleft lip and palate surgery? The following are preoperative considerations for cleft lip and palate surgery: 1. Since the target of cleft lip repair surgery is infants, preoperative preparation is especially important.  2. The red and white blood cells of the pre-operative laboratory test should be within the normal range, and if there is any discrepancy with the normal value, treatment must be given and the surgery will be performed after the normal value is restored.  3.The child must be in the process of weight gain before surgery, weighing >5 kg.  4.On the day of surgery, wash the upper and lower lips and nose with soapy water and scrub the mouth with saline cotton balls.  5. Disinfect the operating area with 1:1000 benzalkonium bromide or 75% ethanol at the time of surgery.  6. In addition, the bleeding and clotting time of the child should also be normal.  7.Usually no blood transfusion is needed during surgery, but 5% glucose should be given intravenously.
