These symptoms are often aggravated by excessive use of the voice, sudden changes in climate or cold air. In some patients, prolonged speech can trigger acute pharyngitis. Chronic pharyngitis can spread upward to the eustachian tube, resulting in tinnitus or hearing loss, and downward to the larynx, resulting in hoarseness, and some patients are seen clinically to have changes of chronic pharyngitis on local examination but no conscious symptoms, which may be related to tolerance.
