Hypothyroidism, also known as hypothyroidism, is an endocrine disorder caused by a decrease in the metabolic activity of the body due to a lack of or insufficient thyroid hormones or a lack of response to them. Hypothyroidism is a common clinical condition with causes related to genetics, autoimmune disorders, improper medication, thyroid inflammation, and thyroid surgery. The etiology of adult hypothyroidism is mainly due to a deficiency of thyroid hormones. The latter is due to hypopituitarism, which results in insufficient secretion of thyroid stimulating hormone, or hypothalamic disorders, which result in insufficient secretion of thyroid stimulating hormone releasing hormone. The common clinical manifestations of hypothyroidism include fear of cold, hoarseness, constipation, weight gain, facial swelling, drowsiness, weakness, hand and foot swelling, mucinous edema, etc. Male patients may experience impotence, while female patients may experience menstrual disorders, excessive menstruation or infertility. Therefore, hypothyroidism is an endocrine disease. If the above symptoms occur, one needs to be highly alert and should visit the endocrinology department as soon as possible to check the thyroid function to assess the degree of hypothyroidism.
