Quitting Smoking Series #6: Why Quitting Smoking Cannot Be Based on Willpower Alone

Many smokers have failed to quit and attribute the reason to their weak willpower. In fact, those who fail to quit smoking do not have weak willpower, but they do not know that smoking and tobacco dependence is a disease and that they need medical help to quit smoking. Smoking, also known as tobacco dependence, is a nicotine dependence addiction and is a disease. Once a smoker becomes addicted to nicotine, he or she needs to keep smoking to maintain a stable level of nicotine in the brain. When this level is not reached, the smoker feels irritable, sick, nauseous, and has a headache, which is similar to withdrawal from drugs. Only a few smokers quit completely the first time by willpower, and most smokers have quit for a period of time and then return to smoking. Thus, quitting smoking cannot be based solely on willpower.
