Does thyroid cancer need iodine 131 treatment?

Only differentiated thyroid cancer (mainly papillary and follicular carcinomas) can be considered for iodine 131 therapy, but it is contraindicated in pregnancy, lactation, planned short-term (6-month) pregnancy; in those who are unable to follow radiation protection instructions; and not recommended in those with cancer foci smaller than 1 cm and without extra-glandular infiltration, lymph nodes or distant metastases.
