What exactly is trigeminal neuralgia?

What is trigeminal neuralgia? When trigeminal neuralgia occurs, many patients will treat it as a migraine or toothache, or even prescribe a lot of drugs for pain treatment, pull out teeth, but it is not good, and may take Chinese medicine, or acupuncture treatment, but still not good, and only finally diagnosed as trigeminal neuralgia. Trigeminal neuralgia is a common brain neurological disease in the middle-aged and elderly, often manifested as severe pain on one side of the face, the pain is paroxysmal, knife-like, fire-like, electric shock-like or tear-like severe pain, can be triggered when the wind blowing, washing face, brushing teeth, talking or eating, the patient often feel very painful during the attack, long-term, emotional depression, anxiety, serious people can feel pain. The trigeminal nerve is the ophthalmic branch, maxillary branch and mandibular branch, which innervate the facial skin sensation on the same side respectively. The three branches of the trigeminal nerve can develop separately or simultaneously, mostly on one side. If branch I develops, the pain is located on the ipsilateral brow arch, frontal area, temporal area, and sometimes may spread to the top of the ipsilateral side; if branch II develops, the pain is located on the ipsilateral cheek, frontal area of the ear, nose, and upper jaw, and the pain attack is easily triggered when touching the upper gum, nose, and corner of the mouth; if branch III develops, the pain is located on the ipsilateral side of the lower jaw, lower gum and lower lip, and the pain attack is easily triggered when touching the lower lip or lower gum. Trigeminal neuralgia has a great impact on patients’ physical and mental health as well as their work and life. The answer is yes, according to the pathogenesis of trigeminal neuralgia is due to the pulsatile compression of the trigeminal sensory roots into the pontine brain (REZ), microvascular decompression can relieve the pain or even make the pain disappear. This procedure does not damage the facial nerve and preserves the integrity and functionality of the face. It has now become the preferred surgical treatment for trigeminal neuralgia. Many people may ask if there are any drugs that can cure trigeminal neuralgia other than surgery, which is not yet available, but after early diagnosis, the drugs carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine are often used, while some patients may also be equipped with methylcobalamin, a sedative and pain-relieving drug. These drugs can stop pain, but they do not cure trigeminal neuralgia. When the condition is long and aggravated, many patients increase the dosage on their own, which leads to reduced efficacy and side effects that are unbearable. Therefore, it is important to follow scientific and formal treatment, and not to treat blindly, which brings unnecessary complications and sequelae.
