What causes skin infections?

Skin infections can be caused by a variety of factors, including pathogenic infections and sexually transmitted diseases.
Pathogenic infections include viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites. In addition, skin and mucosal barrier dysfunction and reduced immunity are risk factors for skin infections. Skin barrier dysfunction includes physiological factors such as age and pathological factors such as secondary disease and trauma. Decreased immunity can be caused by a variety of factors including medication use and secondary to other diseases.
Further tests are needed to determine exactly what pathogenic infection is present.
