Giant cell tumor of bone, a tumor that is both good and evil

Giant cell tumor of bone is a tumor of indeterminate benignity and malignancy, which occurs in 20-40 years of age, slightly more in women, with a predilection for the long bone epiphysis and vertebral body, especially the distal femur and proximal tibia. The clinical manifestations are: pain and swelling (associated with the development of the disease), restricted movement of the lesioned joint, eccentric position of the bone end, osteolytic and cystic destruction, expansion and growth of the lesion, thinning of the bone cortex, and soap bubble-like changes. Final diagnosis requires tissue biopsy. Treatment: Based on the biopsy results, the tumor type and stage will be determined, and then individualized surgical plan will be formulated according to the age, location of onset and physical condition. According to the different needs of patients, artificial prosthesis replacement can be considered. Recovery exercises (here, the distal femur and proximal tibia are used as examples): the rehabilitation exercises in “bursitis” and “meniscus injury” can be referred to, but care should be taken to avoid overloading the knee joint to reduce wear and tear.
