What is diabetic lower extremity arteriopathy

Lower extremity arteriopathy in diabetic patients usually refers to atherosclerotic lesions of the lower extremity arteries and is one of the chronic complications of diabetes. Screening for lower extremity atherosclerotic lesions should be routinely performed in diabetic patients over 50 years of age. Diabetic patients with risk factors for the development of lower extremity atherosclerotic disease (e.g., cardiovascular disease, dyslipidemia, hypertension, smoking, or diabetes of more than 5 years’ duration) should be screened at least once a year. Diabetic patients with foot ulcers and gangrene, regardless of age, should undergo comprehensive arteriopathy screening and evaluation. Patients presenting with diabetic lower extremity arteriopathy should follow medical advice and standardize their treatment to avoid delays.
