Talking about amblyopia in children

1.What is amblyopia? Amblyopia is a condition in which the corrected visual acuity of one or both eyes is less than 0.9 and there is no organic lesion in the eye, but the visual acuity cannot reach normal after wearing corrective glasses. Age should be taken into account when diagnosing amblyopia based on corrected visual acuity. 2. How to detect amblyopia in children at an early stage? Even if parents feel that everything is normal in their child’s eyes, they can still go to the pediatric ophthalmology department for refractive screening after 6 months, which can detect risk factors for amblyopia at an early stage. At the latest, at the age of 3.5 years, a visual acuity check is required. Parents can buy a standard vision chart to teach their children to identify, and after several training sessions, if vision is found to be less than 0.5, they must promptly go to the hospital for further examination. Children should have 1-2 eye exams each year, including external eye, eye position, and fundus exams for early detection of eye disorders in infants and children. Kindergartens should conduct vision exams every six months and notify parents of any problems. 3. What is the most appropriate age to start treatment for amblyopic children? The earlier the better. Amblyopia treatment is mainly about correcting refractive errors (wearing glasses) and covering the good eye, and the earlier these treatments are given, the better. Other supportive measures, such as functional training, work best between the ages of 4 and 6 years. The effect is less effective beyond 6 years of age. 4. How can parents and early childhood educators cooperate with doctors in treating amblyopia? In addition to the doctor’s guidance, the treatment of amblyopia requires the active cooperation of parents, children, early childhood educators and elementary school teachers. Parents should pay enough attention to their children and bring them for follow-up examinations in time, usually once a month. At the same time, they should supervise their children to do some fine activities and also find ways to change the form of fine visual activities to arouse their interest. During the treatment period, parents should contact the kindergarten staff and elementary school teachers to explain the situation and obtain cooperation. 5.How to prevent amblyopia in children? (1) Start with eugenics, prohibit marriage between close relatives, avoid congenital cataracts due to genetic factors, and use forceps carefully during childbirth. In addition, during pregnancy, prevent the occurrence of various infectious diseases. (2) To create a good learning environment and train the child in correct reading and writing posture. (3) Have an eye examination at the pediatric ophthalmology department early after birth. From the age of 3, children should have regular annual vision checkups, and if they are found to have habits such as crooked neck and squinting, they should be checked early. (4) Children who are screened for vision problems must have their pupils dilated and examined; (5) Children who are diagnosed with hyperopia or myopia should wear glasses of the right prescription to correct their vision; (6) For children with refractive disparity between the two eyes, the good eye should be covered and the child should be forced to see with the bad eye, such as wearing beads, drawing, etc.; (7) Go to the hospital for systematic amblyopia treatment, such as amblyopia treatment devices, red light flashing, fine training, etc.
