Eyelid fluttering is medically called blepharospasm and has no other special meaning. It is usually associated with poor rest and excessive eye use, and can easily occur when life is stressful and mental pressure is high. These transient blepharospasms are not a cause for concern, but when they last for a long time and are associated with spasms in the facial muscles, they may be a problem with the facial nerve and require consultation with ophthalmology and neurology. When the facial nerve is compressed or infected with a virus, the facial muscles may twitch involuntarily, which may require surgery to relieve the nerve compression, or antiviral treatment for the nerve.
