How does TCM treat wind-cold and wind-heat colds?

  According to Chinese medicine, colds are caused by the wind evil attacking the lung and skin when the body is not able to defend itself against evil. In the four seasons, the climate is not normal, such as spring should be warm but cold, summer should be hot but cold, etc., wind evil easily invade the body and colds, and even cause seasonal colds. The cause of cold, although the wind is the main evil, but there are often mixed. Clinically, wind-cold and wind-heat are the two most common symptoms. In addition, the seasonal summer, wet, dry evil can also be mixed with the disease. Therefore, there are different concurrent symptoms such as heat, humidity and dryness.  In addition to wind attack, cold is also related to physical weakness and different qualities. If there is phlegm-heat in the lungs, it is also easy to develop this disease. The location of wind invasion is mainly in the lung health, and the systemic symptoms are more pronounced because of the heavier feeling of the seasonal evil. Older and weaker people have poor ability to resist the evil, so the external evil can enter from the surface and turn into other diseases. The disease is generally characterized by real evidence, such as physical weakness, the evidence of the deficiency of the symptoms.  External wind-cold symptoms: nasal congestion, itchy sneezing, runny nose, cough with clear phlegm, even fever and cold, no sweat, headache, aching limbs, thin white tongue coating, floating and tight pulse. Treatment: Pungent warmth relieves the symptoms and expels cold from the lung.  Add and subtract: if wind-cold stagnation is more severe, add ephedra and cinnamon; if cough and phlegm are more severe, add almonds and zhebei mum.  Wind-cold with dampness Symptoms: vicious cold with little sweat, heavy head like a wrap, aching pain in the joints of the limbs, heavy cough, stuffy nose and runny nose, white and greasy tongue coating, moist pulse. Treatment: Expel wind and dispel dampness, dispel cold and relieve symptoms.  Qiangwu Shengshu Tang: Qiangwu, Douhu, Ligusticum, Fangfeng, Licorice, Chuanxiong and Manchuria.  Add and subtract: without sweating, add Dou roll and Atractylodes macrocephala; for phlegm, add Radix et Rhizoma hallucinogenes and Chen Pi.  External wind-heat Symptoms: fever and vicious wind, or slightly vicious cold, headache, stuffy nose and runny nose, cough with yellow phlegm, dry mouth and thirst, red and painful throat, red tongue, thin yellow fur, floating pulse. Treatment: Cool the exterior with pungency, promote the lung to disperse and clear heat.  Yin Qiao San: Silver Flower, Forsythia, Radix Platycodon, Peppermint, Bamboo Leaf, Raw Licorice, Mustard Seed, Tempeh, Burdock, Fresh Rutabaga.  Add and subtract: if nasal congestion and headache are obvious, add Cang Er Zi, Xin Yi, Bai Zhi; if sore throat is severe, add Yuan Shen, Ma Bo, Ban Lan Gen; if thirst is severe, add Tian Tian Fan; if heat is severe, add Baicalin.  Wind-heat with dryness Symptoms: fever with slight evil wind-cold, dry nose and throat, cough without or with little phlegm, head and body pain, dry mouth and thirst, red tongue with little fluid, floating pulse. Treatment: Drain wind and clear heat, moisten dryness and stop coughing. Yin Qiao San combined with Sang Xing Tang Yin Hua, Lian Qiao, Bamboo Leaf, Thornbush, Burdock, Peppermint, Tempeh, Licorice, Radix Platycodon, Rutabaga, Mulberry Leaf, Almond, Salvia, Xiang Bei, Gardenia Peel, Pear Peel.  External cold and internal heat Symptoms: vicious cold without sweating, aching limbs, heart trouble, coughing and shortness of breath, hoarse voice, sore throat, red tongue with slight yellow coating, pulse count. Treatment: Dispersing cold in the lung, clearing heat and relieving cough.  Addition and subtraction: for heavier internal heat, add Scutellaria baicalensis, Gardenia jasminoides, Rutaceae; for heavy cough, add Qian Hu, Mulberry Bark; for obvious limb pain, add Qiang Wu, Dou Wu.  External heat and dampness Symptoms: body heat with slight evil wind and cold, little sweating, soreness and pain in the limbs, dizziness and heavy swelling, cough with sticky phlegm, stuffy nose and runny nose, stuffy chest and epigastric region, nausea and vomiting, sticky mouth, no thirst or not much thirsty drinking, or disturbed heart, or unpleasant stool, red urine, yellowish coating on the tongue and moist pulse. Treatment: Clearing summer heat and dispelling dampness, promoting the lung and relieving symptoms.  Herb: Five Flavors Elsholtzini Drink with Flavors Elsholtzini, lentils, thick park, poria, licorice, artemisia, gardenia, and lotus leaf.  If the dampness on the surface is heavy and the limbs are sore and the head is dizzy, add doucao, patchouli, and pelargonium; if the dampness on the inside is heavy and the epigastric abdominal constipation and vomiting are very bad, add atractylodes, cardamom seeds, clear half summer, and Chen Pi; if the heat on the inside is strong and the urine is short and red, add Liuyi San.
