Both boils and carbuncles are acute bacterial purulent inflammation of hair follicles and surrounding tissues. They are characterized by varying degrees of redness, swelling and pain of the skin, and may be accompanied by systemic symptoms (chills, fever, etc.), and their treatment includes topical treatments and medications. Boil usually refers to the involvement of a single pore, preferably on the head, neck, face, etc., manifested as small nodules on the skin surface, redness, swelling and pain, followed by necrosis of the tissue in the middle of the small nodules, and the emergence of yellowish-white pus plugs. In the early stage, mupirocin ointment, erythromycin ointment can be used externally, or take amoxicillin, cefaclor and other antibiotics, after the formation of pus embolism, the skin can be cut, drain out the pus, and change the medication regularly, the boils will heal quickly. Carbuncle is formed by fusion of several boils, mostly seen in middle-aged and old people, often combined with diabetes mellitus, preferably in the neck and back, manifested as hard swelling of the local skin, hot and painful, there may be more than one pus spot, often with systemic symptoms (chills, fever, loss of appetite, etc.), and then the site of the lesion can be purple-brown due to necrosis of the tissues, and it is difficult to heal on its own. The treatment of carbuncle is: before abscess formation, ichthyol ointment can be used externally to promote the formation of abscess, and at the same time take amoxicillin, cefaclor and other antibiotics to fight infection, after the formation of abscess need to be surgically incised and drained, and placed on the drainage strip to drain the pus, and change the medication regularly, and those with a history of diabetes mellitus should also be controlled by blood glucose. Boils and carbuncles should be actively treated once diagnosed, and delayed treatment often makes the lesion expand and worsen.
