The treatment of periapical infection in pregnant women is actually the same as our regular treatment. If periapical infection occurs in the affected tooth, it means that the pulp is basically necrotic, so pregnant women do not need to be anesthetized when they come for treatment of periapical infection in the affected tooth, so don’t worry too much. The first step is the root canal preparation, which opens the pulp chamber, cleans the infected material in the root canal system through the root canal preparation, and then seals in the anti-inflammatory medication, which only works locally and rarely enters the blood system causing a systemic reaction. The second step is root canal filling, the root canal filling material is also a very good biocompatible material, there will be no side effects, the filling material reaches the tip of the root, and the part that touches the apical tissue is also very small, it will not cause systemic reactions or serious discomfort, it is also safe for pregnant women. The main differences between root canal treatment for pregnant women and conventional root canal treatment are the following two aspects: 1) taking X-rays, but pregnant women do not need to take X-rays; 2) taking oral anti-inflammatory drugs. If there is no serious discomfort during or after the root canal treatment, oral anti-inflammatory medication can be dispensed with. If serious post-operative reactions occur and oral anti-inflammatory medication must be taken, pregnant women should consult their obstetrician and gynecologist and let them prescribe anti-inflammatory medication, which is safer.
