Side effects of Radix et Rhizoma Ginseng and Atractylodes Macrocephalae

Ginseng and Atractylodes macrocephala is a classic formula in the “Taiping Huimin and Pharmaceutical Bureau Formula”, which consists of ten Chinese herbs: ginseng, poria, atractylodes (fried), yam, white lentils (fried), lotus seeds, coix seeds (fried), sand, orris, and licorice. The instructions of Ginseng Ling Bai Zhu San and its related preparations are labeled “not yet clear” under “adverse reactions”. As a matter of fact, Ginseng Ling Bai Zhu San is a commonly used formula for treating spleen deficiency and diarrhea or lung deficiency and coughing and asthma.

In the formula of Radix et Rhizoma Ginseng and Atractylodes Macrocephalae, most of the herbs have the function of strengthening the spleen, permeating dampness and tonifying Qi. Most of these herbs are sweet and warm in nature. From the point of view of the bias of Chinese medicine, apart from the therapeutic effect, excessive consumption of such drugs may have the side effect of stimulating Yang and fire, which may lead to a series of symptoms commonly referred to as “fire”, such as sores on the mouth and tongue, red eyes and swelling, constipation, sore throat and dry throat, bitterness and thirst. Therefore, the drug’s instructions also suggest that “diarrhea with loose stools, anal drop feeling is contraindicated”. In other words, people who have been on fire for a long time should not take this medicine.

Although Ginseng and Atractylodes macrocephala has clear efficacy and is warm but not dry, it should be taken in the right amount according to medical advice to avoid side effects.
