Hiccups and stomach pains indicate poor gastric emptying and possible gastric pyloric obstruction. A common cause is obstruction due to pyloric edema caused by gastritis or gastroduodenal ulcer, where the stomach contents cannot enter the duodenum and then reflux, stimulating the diaphragm, and hiccups can occur. It can be treated with gastrointestinal motility drugs, such as morpholine or cisapride, and proton pump inhibitors, such as pantoprazole or rabeprazole, can be used to relieve pain. A gastroscopy is recommended to observe specific lesions in the stomach and to check for H. pylori infection that can cause gastritis or gastroduodenal ulcer. If the H. pylori infection is positive, treatment to remove H. pylori needs to be done with quadruple therapy.
