How to make children drink Chinese medicine well

Many parents prefer herbal medicine when their children are sick because of its mild nature, its combination of symptoms and side effects. However, even adults frown at the bitter taste of herbal decoction, let alone children. It is a real headache for parents to get their children to drink herbal medicine well. The following precautions will help your child to drink herbal medicine well. Different feeding methods for different age groups Decoctions of Chinese medicine are generally bitter and children are reluctant to take them. Different feeding methods can be used for children of different ages. For children over the age of 3, try not to force them to take the medicine, which may cause them to resist, and suggest that parents be patient and persuasive before they take the medicine, explaining that “bitter medicine is good for the sick”, so that they can take the medicine on their own initiative. Parents are usually the role models for their children, so they can drink 1-2 sips in front of their children. You can also add some sugar to the medicine to reduce the bitter taste. For infants and children under 3 years old, the method of infusion is often taken. When filling the medicine, do not pinch the child’s nose with your hands, so as not to cause choking and vomiting. When feeding, hold the child in your arms in a semi-recumbent position, fix his head and hands, press the middle of the tongue with a tongue depressor or a small spoon, or pinch the child’s cheeks with your left thumb and forefinger to make his mouth open, then use a small spoon filled with medicine to send it along the corner of the mouth to the root of the tongue. After feeding, remove the spoon when you hear the swallowing sound of the medicine, and then feed the second mouthful. After feeding the medicine, give some warm water to wash away the residual medicine in the mouth and pick up the child and gently pat the back to prevent vomiting. In addition, there is a little trick to feed small babies within 3-4 months of age. You can pour the medicine into a bottle, put some honey on the nipple, and let the child suck it when he or she is confused and wants to sleep, and when the child feels the bitter taste, he or she has already swallowed part of the medicine. It is best to decoct the herbs twice in a row, blend them together, and then divide them into several portions to be taken. School-age children can be divided into 3 to 4 times, while infants can be divided into 5 to 6 times or even more, each time at an interval of half an hour or 1 to 3 hours before feeding, never in a hurry. Chinese medicine has “vomit medicine does not vomit sex” said, even if the child after taking some vomiting, parents should not lose confidence, can be fed again after a while, generally always feed into the more, spit out less. The temperature and time of taking medicine also have to pay attention to Chinese medicine has a “hot cold, cold hot” theory, so take medicine hot and warm, which can improve the efficacy of drugs. After taking the medicine, you can also feed some hot water, hot milk or hot porridge, and then cover the child with a quilt to make him sweat, so as to help reduce the fever. There is also a time for taking decoction of Chinese medicine: usually there is no time for taking medicine for acute diseases; tonic medicine and laxative medicine should be taken on an empty stomach. The medicine for throat disease should be swallowed slowly or swallowed with gargle; stomachic medicine or medicine that is irritating to the gastrointestinal tract should be taken after meals; if the child is prone to vomiting after taking the medicine, the medicine can be taken before meals.
