How is bulimia nervosa treated?

Treatment of bulimia nervosa includes medication, psychotherapy, and psychological growth of the individual. 1. Medication: Medications can relieve accompanying emotional problems such as depression, irritability, and anger, and reduce impulsive behavior. 2. Psychotherapy is very important to help patients. Most patients experience strong emotions such as internal pain, emptiness, depression, and anger. Each binge eating episode is preceded by unpleasant experiences such as interpersonal conflicts, unsatisfactory academic and work performance, and they deal with their emotions in an impulsive binge eating manner. All these need to be done through psychological work to help patients channel their emotions, change their cognitive biases, and repair their inner psychological conflicts, repressed traumas, etc. 3. Self-growth: Patients tend to ignore their psychological problems, lack effective ways to express their emotions when they encounter unpleasant emotions, and tend to repress themselves and self-denial. These are all related to the patient’s personality characteristics and past experiences. Through psychological counseling, self-analysis and growth, character traits can be perfected and the troubles of bulimia nervosa can be overcome as soon as possible.
