Recurrent fever in mastitis occurs mostly during the postnatal period when women are breastfeeding, mainly due to lack of breastfeeding skills in the first time mothers, resulting in milk stagnation and secondary bacterial infection. A blockage of the milk ducts during breastfeeding can cause milk to accumulate and form local lumps, inflammation or abscesses, which can lead to a generalised fever. After the fever has subsided, if the blocked milk ducts are still not clear, there is a risk that the milk may become stagnant again, leading to repeated fevers.
