Developed on the basis of traditional Chinese acupuncture and modern anatomy, neurophysiology, and bio-holography, head acupuncture is a micro-prick systematic method of treating diseases in various disciplines by needling specific areas of the head. According to traditional medicine, the body’s meridian qi is concentrated in the head and face through the meridian system. It is stated in “Su Wen・Pulse Essence and Subtlety” that “the head is the capital of essence.” Ming Dynasty Zhang Jiebin said: “the essence of the five viscera and six bowels, are rising in the head.” Because “the head is the meeting of the yang”, the human hands and feet of the three yang meridians, as well as the dushi vein, are traveling up the head. The head has a close connection with the twelve meridians and the eight strange meridians. Therefore, acupuncture head related points, through the conduction of the meridians, can regulate the function of the five viscera and six bowels, dredge the twelve meridians and qi meridians and eight veins of qi blood, the body’s entire meridian system have played a role in regulating. According to the function of the cerebral cortex in the corresponding projection zone on the scalp, the scalp can be divided into intellectual zone, language zone, motor zone, balance zone, emotional zone, etc., in these areas to apply acupuncture, needle sensation reflexive effect on the various reflex zones in the parts of the nervous system, mobilizing and stimulating a series of self-regulating mechanism of the organism, improve the speed of blood flow to the head, promote nutrient metabolism in brain tissue, activate and mobilize the brain cells. It can also make some drugs easily pass through the blood-brain barrier, directly nourish the brain cells and promote the recovery of nerve function. At present, the head-acupuncture therapy used in our department focuses on combining traditional Chinese medicine theories with modern medical anatomical and physiological knowledge, and it can play a good therapeutic role for children with cerebral palsy in terms of movement disorders, postural abnormalities, and the accompanying mental retardation, speech disorders, and behavioral abnormalities. What’s more, the needle sensation left behind by the head needle can also echo with other treatments in our department, such as functional training, speech training, music therapy and other therapies, so as to achieve twice the result with half the effort.
