Chronic pharyngitis is a diffuse chronic inflammation of the pharyngeal mucosa, submucosa and lymphoid tissue as part of a chronic inflammation of the upper respiratory tract, mostly seen in adults. Acute pharyngitis is mostly caused by viral or bacterial infections, while chronic pharyngitis can be caused by recurrent episodes of acute pharyngitis. Chronic pharyngitis can also be caused by various nasal diseases, chronic inflammation of the respiratory tract, long-term open-mouth breathing and inflammatory secretions repeatedly stimulate the pharynx, or by chronic tonsillitis, periodontitis, pharyngeal reflux, etc. Excessive smoking and alcohol, dust, harmful gases, spicy food and other long-term stimulation can also cause chronic pharyngitis. In addition, systemic factors such as anemia, indigestion, chronic inflammation of the lower respiratory tract, cardiovascular disease, endocrine disorders, vitamin deficiency or immune deficiency can also cause chronic pharyngitis. Patients with chronic pharyngitis generally do not have obvious systemic symptoms, and those with symptoms mainly show a foreign body sensation in the pharynx, an itchy pharynx, a burning, dry or slightly painful sensation in the pharynx. Some patients may have frequent irritating coughs with nausea in the morning due to sticky secretions attached to the back wall of the pharynx. Patients with chronic pharyngitis usually have no sputum or cough up only granular couscous-like secretions. In summary, chronic pharyngitis can be caused by a variety of reasons, mainly manifesting as dry throat, itchy throat, foreign body sensation in the throat, and some patients may have an irritating cough.
