The first in vitro fertilization on the mainland

”On March 10, 1988, Zheng Mengzhu, the first IVF baby on the mainland, was born in the Third Hospital of Peking University. Together with Zhang Dixing and Luo Youqun, who were born in Changsha, Hunan Province in the same year, they are the first three IVF babies with known identities on the mainland. What are the intellectual and physical levels of IVF babies? Are there any special features in their lives? Through the life trajectory of these three IVF babies, we may be able to know more.         As the first three IVF babies in mainland China, Zheng Mengzhu, Zhang Dixing and Luo Youqun were all born in 1988, and around 2006, they all coincidentally enrolled in university. Zheng Mengzhu enrolled in Xi’an Xijing College, majoring in English, followed by “sister” Zhang Dixing, who studied finance at Hunan Normal University, and “brother” Luo Youqun, who entered Xiangnan Medical College, studying clinical medicine. From the perspective of their academic careers, the three IVF babies have different personalities and strengths, and their intelligence levels are not inferior to those of babies born naturally. Zheng Mengzhu is somewhat boyish and speaks with humor, while Luo Youqun is filial and progressive and won a scholarship in college, and Zhang Dixing has had strong language skills since middle school and has done quite well in English and language. They are not “super babies”, as Zheng Mengzhu said: “We are no different from other children, only that the method of production is different. They were naturally fertilized, I was in vitro fertilized, then implanted, and finally born through the October pregnancy, it’s that simple, I was just in the test tube for a few days, a little high-tech.” Life As the first three IVF babies known on the mainland, Zheng Mengzhu, Zhang Dixing and Luo Youqun grew up as public figures. Under the media’s attention, Luo Youqun showed a very open attitude: “From the time I was in elementary school, junior high school, high school, until college, there were reporters who found the school to interview me, my classmates and teachers, none of them did not know I was an IVF baby, I had nothing to avoid and did not feel inconvenienced.” At the age of 15, Luo Youqun stepped into the Newsroom, and at the age of 25, she recorded My Chinese Dream. Luo Youqun has always lived sunny in the public eye as an IVF spokesperson. In contrast, Zheng Mengzhu did not like the attention she received at first because of her IVF status, but under the guidance of Dr. Liu Ping, director of the Center for Reproductive Medicine at Beihang Hospital, she gradually looked away. I said to her, “You should put your mind at ease, there are some things you can’t avoid, since fate has made you the first IVF case on the mainland, you have the responsibility to become a propagandist of IVF technology. Later she figured it out and told me that, yes, I should face this luck calmly.” Speaking about Zheng Mengzhu, Director Liu Ping had this to say. In addition to looking at their status calmly, all three babies also cherish their current lives. Talking about her birth, Zheng Mengzhu is particularly grateful to her mother: “It was not easy for my mother, she received two stabs to give birth to me. One cut was to repair her ovaries and the other was a C-section. So, love your mother well. All people should respect the women around them! No matter what they have done, how much they have suffered just by giving birth to a child.” Zhang Dixing not only buys a bouquet of flowers for her mother on Mother’s Day every year, but also sends flowers to Professor Lu Guang L, who “delivered” her, to express her gratitude during the New Year. “My name was given to me by Grandma Lu, and they hope that I, as an IVF baby, can become a good member of the crowd.” . The parents of several IVF babies are even less worried about the status of their children, “The child is our own, and we are all quite happy to see her growing up healthy and successful in her studies. That’s what parents want, isn’t it? We also know many people who are unable to have children, and they are the ones who feel the real pain. In vitro technology has given me the right to be a mother and it’s my own child, how wonderful!” Talking about her child, Zheng Mengzhu’s mother said with relief. To this day, all three IVF babies have stepped into their jobs and coincidentally returned to their birthplace back then to embark on careers related to IVF and assisted reproduction. “My wish at the beginning was to be involved in IVF research in the future. When the time comes, IVF and then ‘making’ another IVF baby, it must be quite an interesting thing.” Now, he and Zhang Dixing, who was born three days before him, are both working at the reproductive center of Professor Lu Guang L, who “birthed” them, with Luo Youqun as a researcher and Zhang Dixing in finance. “The joy of watching a single cell in a test tube turn into a baby, and then into elementary school, high school, college, and into the workplace is indescribable.” Lu Guang-L is always very happy to talk about his “children”. Likewise, Zheng Mengzhu has returned to her birthplace, the Reproductive Center of Beihang Hospital, to work hard for more IVF mothers and IVF babies. When she first returned to her birthplace, the laboratory of the Center for Reproductive Medicine at Beihang Hospital, at the age of 20, she sang “Life in Anger” in front of Professor Zhang Lizhu, who “delivered” her. At that time, Professor Zhang was 87 years old, and although her energy was not as strong as before, she was still very happy: “Many people did not understand at that time, but I did it for my patients.” By 2013, the number of IVF babies born worldwide exceeded 5 million, and in China alone, more than 500,000 IVF cycles were performed in one year. “This means that when these children enter elementary school, there will be an average of one “IVF baby” in each class, and this percentage is increasing every year. “IVF is a technology that has brought happiness and success to millions of mothers and fathers, and I believe that every IVF baby will have a better future in the future!
