Hyperpigmentation refers to an abnormal increase in melanin, which can be caused by hormonal changes in the body or by the deposition of heavy metals in the skin tissue, and can also be caused by sun exposure, drugs, and inflammation. Hyperpigmentation seriously affects people’s appearance and social life and causes heavy psychological stress. Traditional treatments include cosmetics, topical herbs, chemical peels, mask inversions, grinding, and traditional lasers. However, the variety of treatments and various advertisements and internet propaganda often lead to many treatment misconceptions, including: the illusion of rapid pigment removal; the courage to try various new pigment removal methods without regard to the consequences; and the ability of facial cleansers, toners and other whitening products to eradicate pigment from the face. Photon is currently considered a new and more reliable method of treating pigmentation. Each treatment cleanses the face, followed by irradiation of broad-spectrum light of 400-1200nm for 15-20 minutes. Usually 4-5 treatments are needed, one treatment every 20-30 days. However, phototherapy also has certain complications that patients can avoid by choosing a regular medical institution and an experienced treating doctor.
