Frostbite occurs in locations that are easily exposed and at the ends of the limbs, like the fingers, ears, and the tip of the nose are relatively common. In the early stages of frostbite, small, confined hard lumps appear in these areas, and the patient will experience itching and swelling. The itching will be significantly worse when the patient encounters hot water or warmer objects. As the frostbite gradually worsens, these areas will appear distinctly purplish and discolored when pressed, and the borders are usually relatively clear. Some patients with severe frostbite may develop blisters that break down and form ulcers that do not heal for a long time. Frostbite can slowly heal on its own as the weather warms up.
