Sputum is often caused by respiratory diseases, and the cause of sputum needs to be identified first and then treated accordingly, e.g.
for sputum caused by a lung infection, antibiotic treatment may be an option.
patients with asthma, which can be treated with glucocorticoids and beta2 agonists
tuberculosis, which requires standardised anti-tuberculosis treatment.
On top of treatment for the cause, symptomatic supportive therapy such as antipyretic, cough suppressant and sputum reduction may be used as an adjunct.
