Do I have to have a lateral incision for normal delivery?

A lateral perineal incision is an oblique incision made in the perineum. Episiotomy includes not only a lateral incision, but also a median incision, which is usually good after surgery. If all conditions are good in the preoperative assessment and the labor goes well, it is usually not a lateral incision. In case of uneventful labor, such as malposition of the fetal head, weak labor, long birth canal, large fetus, preterm labor or hypoxia, perineal tear, heart disease or hypertension, the doctor will use a lateral perineal incision, that is, a little cut on the side of the vagina, in order to shorten the second stage of labor, to facilitate the delivery of the fetal head, to avoid serious perineal tear and to avoid the perineal tear. The purpose of the lateral incision is to shorten the second stage of labor, to facilitate the delivery of the fetal head, to avoid severe tears of the perineum and to prevent the perineum from being severely torn and to shorten the time of delivery. Since the incision is made at the peak of the labor, the perineal incision is basically not felt. In order to avoid lateral incision in normal delivery, it is recommended that pregnant mothers exercise properly during pregnancy to increase skin elasticity and perineal tissue stretching, even if they face lateral incision, they do not need to be too nervous because the wound healing ability of women’s perineum is very strong. The lateral incision is small, but because of its special location, near the urethra in front and near the anus in the back, plus the large amount of postpartum malodour causes the wound to be very easy to cause infection. And the inner flesh line, if not absorbed, will also be easy to carry bacteria, causing the wound not to heal or infection. Therefore, it is very important to take care of the wound and prevent infection within one week after the lateral incision. In order to avoid lateral incision, it is recommended that pregnant mothers exercise properly during pregnancy to increase skin elasticity and perineal tissue stretching, even if faced with lateral incision, pregnant mothers do not need to be too nervous, because the wound healing ability of the female perineum is very strong, and also, mothers-to-be who have undergone perineal lateral incision surgery, sex life will not be affected after delivery.
