In 2003, the American Academy of Pediatrics clearly emphasized that “eye examinations should begin in newborns” and in 2009, the theme of China Eye Care Day was “Early Intervention to Reduce Avoidable Childhood Blindness “For early detection and treatment of childhood eye diseases, 50% of blindness can be avoided. The Technical Specification for Children’s Eye and Vision Care requires that: 1. Healthy children should be screened for eye disease for the first time 28-30 days after birth, and stage eye disease screening and vision screening should be conducted at 3, 6 and 12 months of age and at 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 years of age, respectively. 2. Newborns with high-risk factors for eye disease should be examined by an ophthalmologist as early as possible after birth. Children with visual impairment can be detected, intervened and treated in a timely manner before the age of half a year, especially in the neonatal period, to reduce the incidence of disability due to visual impairment and improve the quality of the population. There are already many hospitals in China that screen newborns for eye disease 24 hours after birth.
