Explaining the misconceptions about IVF

In vitro fertilization and embryo transfer technology, also known as “IVF”, involves placing oocytes from the mother’s body in a culture dish and using a culture medium suitable for the growth of human oocytes for in vitro culture, adding viable sperm selected by in vitro separation process. The sperm and eggs are cultured together in vitro to complete the fertilization process of sperm-egg union, and the embryos with normal fertilization and development are selected and transferred back to the mother’s uterus, where the embryos are implanted and the baby is delivered after an “October pregnancy”. With the development of this technology, more and more IVF babies are being born, but there are still many misconceptions about IVF among infertile couples. Myth #1: IVF is not your “own flesh and blood” This is one of the biggest misconceptions. One of the major psychological barriers for many infertile couples to refuse IVF is the misconception that IVF is “artificially created” for them by the hospital, or They think that the hospital used eggs from the egg bank and sperm from the sperm bank to produce the baby for them, and that it is not related to them in any way. In fact, during the actual operation of IVF, all steps of the procedure are highly demanding and must be strictly verified by medical personnel. and make a request for the hospital to provide eggs or sperm. Of course, IVF is not “artificially created” by hospitals with medical materials. This is another major psychological obstacle for infertile couples to reject IVF, especially when articles report that IVF has a low IQ (I.Q.). “In fact, after more than 30 years of development, more than three million IVF babies have been born worldwide, and early IVF babies have also given birth to their own normal babies, and some larger-scale comprehensive surveys and studies have confirmed that there is no significant difference between IVF babies and naturally conceived babies in terms of birth defects and later physical and intellectual development. There is no significant difference between IVF and naturally conceived babies in terms of birth defects and subsequent physical and intellectual development, so infertile couples can rest assured. Myth 3: IVF has low success rate and high cost Many infertile couples are concerned about the success rate and fees when applying for IVF technology. The success rate of early IVF technology is indeed low, but with the increasing maturity of this technology, the success rate has been improving, and at present, the success rate of large medical institutions that have been carrying out this technology for a long time and are experienced has reached 40%-50%, which is close to the international advanced level. As for the cost, it varies from hospital to hospital, but the average cost of the technology in China is about 20-30,000 RMB per cycle, not 100,000 or 80,000 as it is said to be. Myth 4: IVF is best for multiple births or sex selection Due to the application of ovulation-promoting drugs, the rate of multiple pregnancies in IVF is higher than that of the normal population. The ultimate goal of implementing assisted conception technology is to obtain a healthy child, and a singleton pregnancy is the safest. As for gender selection, although this technique (preimplantation embryo genetic diagnosis, or PGD) is available, it is only for some patients with genetic disorders, the cost is higher than regular IVF, and the pregnancy success rate is lower.
