How to be alert for long-term tongue ulcers

Tongue cancer is most common in the tongue margin. One of the important causes of tongue cancer is chronic ulceration of tongue edge caused by long-term mechanical irritation of tongue edge, which is often caused by sharp tooth tip, tooth root, crown and bad prosthesis. If the oral ulcer does not heal for more than two weeks and changes such as bulging around the ulcer occur, the possibility of tongue cancer should be considered, that is, it is appropriate to make pathological section in time to confirm the diagnosis and actively eliminate the cancer-causing factors to prevent or diagnose tongue cancer at an early stage. What are the symptoms of tongue cancer and how to treat it? Tongue cancer is the most common oral cancer, ranking first among oral malignant tumors. Smoking, betel nut chewing, poor oral hygiene and bad stimulation are all factors that trigger tongue cancer, among which bad stimulation includes stimulation of remaining tooth roots, improper wearing of dentures, eating too hot and too spicy, etc. In addition, rotten tooth tips are also prone to damage tongue mucosa. In addition, the tip of rotten teeth can easily damage the tongue mucosa, and repeated damage for a long time can also lead to lesions. Tongue cancer mostly grows on the tip of the tongue, lateral edge of the tongue, tongue root, tongue belly, etc. The best part is the lateral edge of the tongue, which is related to the long-term stimulation of sharp tooth tips and residual roots and crowns. Therefore, problematic teeth should be treated early. Early symptoms of tongue cancer can include cancerous ulcers, which are similar to general mouth ulcers and can easily delay treatment. In fact, there is a clear difference between the two. Mouth ulcers are usually recurrent and painful, and the ulcers are red in color, sunken in, with some yellowish crusts on top, and feel soft when touched. In contrast, the ulcerated surface of tongue cancer is raised around the periphery and sunken in the center; or it is a lump that protrudes from the surface of the tongue, like a cauliflower, and feels lumpy when touched. The most important point is that it does not heal on its own. “Tongue cancer doesn’t have that kind of recurrence; once it happens, it grows persistently. The most important thing that separates cancer from ulcers is time. If a mouth ulcer lasts for more than ten days or two weeks, you should suspect if there is cancer and go to the hospital for examination.” Early treatment is less costly and more profitable The five-year survival rate of tongue cancer is about 65%, but if lymphatic metastasis occurs, the survival rate is reduced by half. According to the degree of severity, tongue cancer is divided into four stages. Early treatment is mainly surgical, which can remove the small tumor growing on the tongue and remove the lesion. After developing to middle or advanced stage, in addition to surgical removal of tumor, lymph node dissection of the neck is also required. According to the patient’s specific condition, comprehensive treatment methods such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy and targeted therapy are applied, which not only takes a long time to treat but also is very painful.
