Can’t help but see: how many misconceptions are there about x-rays?

X-ray is one of the most common imaging examinations. But in this seemingly simple and normal examination process, some misconceptions exist in patients are really quite a lot. As a doctor who has worked in the radiology department for many years, I have deep feelings about this, and it is necessary to point out certain misconceptions and draw your attention to them. Do not enter the examination room when waiting to enter the radiology department patients are far from just in the outpatient clinic to see the doctor queue so “honest”, may be before and after the queue is too much, too long, resulting in the patient is eager to immediately check, regardless of whether it is before and after the critical, emergency, serious patients, regardless of whether the male or female patients in the examination room to stand, eagerly looking forward to “next” is their own. I do not know that the invisible X-ray, especially scattered rays on the human body has a penetrating effect and ionizing effect, so that the human body to produce biological changes (i.e. biological effects), coupled with radioactive dust in the air, etc. is a kind of damage to the human body, especially for children is more so. Therefore, when patients wait for consultation “offside”, responsible doctors will be kindly advised to ask you to wait quietly in the chair outside the door, then you should not wrongly assume that the doctor is deliberately “drive” you. ”Not metal is not in the way” With the increasing knowledge of medical care, gradually realize that where there is an obstacle to X-ray penetration, such as: metal buttons, zippers, tattoos, earrings, necklaces, hair cards, jade pendants, etc. will be in the doctor’s reminder to remove one by one, the patient is generally willing to cooperate. However, in some cases, patients are less willing to cooperate. When a young mother brought her baby with a cold and fever to take an X-ray, she said she was unwilling to let the child take off her clothes, thinking that it was not metal and would not be a problem. The result made it difficult to diagnose the child’s chest X-ray, and because of the interference of a few pieces of woolen clothes left a lot of artifacts, and eventually she waited for a report with only two hard words: re-photograph! Similarly, there are knee pads, waistbands, plasters, quilts and paint patterns on clothes. So, when you lie on the photography bed, remove the cover quilt, but also do not forget to take off the quilt padded underneath yo, not to mention because it is an emergency hate monopod are carried to the photography bed. ”A patient with a fractured calf from a car accident was in pain, but the radiologist had to give him this or that pose, and he refused to cooperate, thinking that as long as he could see if he had a fracture. In fact, the purpose of the doctor to give you a positive or lateral position is not only to see whether there is a fracture, but also to see whether the fracture end is convex forward or backward, convex to the left or convex to the right, or spiral fracture, etc. This will facilitate the orthopedic surgeon to have a clear understanding of the healing of your fracture end, whether it is a manual reset or surgical incision reset, and how to reset, which is more conducive to the alignment of the fracture end, the line, and the axis, and not to produce deformity after healing. This will help to avoid deformity and sequelae after healing. If the radiographs are not correct and lateral, it is difficult for the doctor to grasp. Therefore, in order for you to suffer less and avoid retakes, you need to follow your doctor’s instructions to complete a standard radiograph. Likewise, you must slightly insist on taking a standard image of the spine in front and side and the chest in front and side. On the contrary, when you are asked to take an oblique view of the lumbar spine to see if there is a fracture of the vertebral arch, you should also take an oblique view with the help of the doctor, such as an oblique view of the chest to see a rib fracture or the heart, an oblique view of the cervical spine to see a lack of blood supply to the brain, a 37-degree view of the maxillary sinus, a 23-degree view of the frontal sinus, a double 45-degree view to see if there is otitis media, and so on, and some have to take an additional tangential view, even on the opposite side. You have to cooperate. ”The human body has two sides” X-ray is not like the usual camera people use, when the left side of the face can not see the right side, and X-ray has a penetrating effect, is to see its internal substance. Therefore, when the lateral position of the bones of the limbs and the spine is taken, one position is sufficient. Sometimes patients insist on taking another side, which is not like the lungs are divided into the left and right lungs, so once which side of the disease will have to which side of the film, the purpose is to make the side of the lesion can be more clearly displayed on the X-ray film to reduce the magnification. Similarly, for the head there is a left and right lateralization. On the contrary, when you suspect a broken finger or toe and go to the radiology department to take a film, the doctor gives you a frontal or oblique film, not even a lateral position, why is this? Think about it, if you take a lateral view, several fingers or toes are overlapped together, what else can you see? ”A patient who said he had “foot pain” came to the radiology department to take a picture, but when the doctor finished the picture, he said it was wrong. Therefore, for one thing, when you can not say the medical parts of the human body, the best way is to point to the doctor, do not take it for granted, causing the doctor’s misunderstanding. Secondly, when pointing out to be precise, obviously a problem of the cervical spine, say anything to take a picture of the head to feel at ease, and some even hate to take a picture from head to foot. This is very bad, not only to increase the radiation of X-rays to you, but also to increase your financial burden. ”Stand and shoot, lie down and shoot the same effect” when taking X-ray plain film should stand, the patient should insist on standing, even with the help of friends and relatives to stand and shoot, take the most common chest photos, the purpose of standing and shooting can make the heart shadow natural under the effect of gravity, in the large inhalation can make the lungs expand, the forehead against the film can reduce the heart blur, reduce the magnification of the heart, and can be due to the increase in the projection distance to make The anterior thoracic leaning film can reduce the blurring of the heart and the magnification of the heart, and the projection of both scapulae outside the lung field and reduce the magnification of the chest due to the increased distance. In addition, the nature of the lesion can be determined, for example, the presence or absence of gas and fluid in the lesion can be seen in the standing position, and the presence or absence of pleural fluid in the chest cavity and its amount can be seen. When the doctor suspects that there is gastrointestinal perforation, because the gas is “running” upward, he can use the standing position to see whether there is a “waning moon” under the diaphragm to determine whether it is free gas; when the doctor suspects that you have intestinal obstruction, he can take a standing abdominal plain film to see whether there is gas and liquid flat to make a clear diagnosis. Of course, in the case of life-threatening can not be a thousand times. There is a saying in our country: If you are here, you are here. Therefore, you have to follow the doctor’s orders and do your best to cooperate with the radiologist. In the end, it is also for your own —- less suffering, early diagnosis and early treatment. Finally, if you are in a position to have had a film, a barium X-ray, or a CT, it is best to take a shower, change your clothes, and drink more tea when you return home, all of which will be good for you.
