The number of days it takes for swelling to go down after a fall depends largely on the severity of the patient’s fall. For soft tissue swelling caused by minor facial skin abrasions or skin lacerations, the edema can generally subside in about 7-10 days. Patients are advised to apply ice to the injury site within 24 hours of the fall to reduce local capillary exudation; after 24 hours, hot compresses can be applied to promote local blood circulation and help reduce swelling. If the face fall injury causes fracture or local soft tissue damage is more serious, the patient’s time to reduce swelling may be extended, at least 1 month or more. For patients with severe hematoma after a face fall, puncture therapy is feasible if necessary. In addition, patients can apply blood-activating and anti-inflammatory drugs appropriately during the period of ice or hot compresses. Avoid spicy and irritating food and avoid smoking and alcohol to help reduce swelling quickly.
