Fiberoptic bronchoscopy and lavage

In recent years, a special type of pneumonia, lobar pneumonia, has started to attack children frequently, and its insidious onset and danger are so great that families of children are unable to prevent it, and it may even be misdiagnosed or missed by some doctors. Jing is 4 and a half years old, with big eyes and dark hair that is very cute! She was a child with lobar pneumonia, who started with fever and cough, and her lungs were not auscultated for a week, and her chest X-ray showed large high-density shadows in the lungs, so she was clinically diagnosed with lobar pneumonia. The CT showed that the pneumonia was aggravated, so the child was transferred to a well-known provincial hospital, where the child’s family heard a very positive and resolute reply from the doctor: “Cut the lung! There is no other way!” The doctor’s words were like a bolt from the blue. The family could not imagine how a 4.5 year old child could bear the pain of a chest cut? What will be the future of life? The family did not give up and found Zou Liping and Zhang Yanli, directors of the respiratory ward of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, who said that we had bronchoalveolar lavage that might save the child from the pain of lung incision, and the family was overjoyed. After 3 times of bronchoalveolar lavage, together with anti-infection and physical therapy, Jing’s body temperature normalized after 1 week, gradually the low breath sounds on the affected side became stronger, and the chest CT also started to improve, and Jing was discharged after 1 month of treatment! The family is very grateful! We also have a sense of accomplishment! This achievement should be attributed to our bronchoalveolar lavage! Bronchoscopy is the placement of a thin bronchoscope into the patient’s lower respiratory tract through the mouth or nose, i.e., through the voice box into the trachea and bronchi and the distal end, to directly observe the lesions of the trachea and bronchi, and to conduct corresponding examination and treatment according to the lesions. Bronchoalveolar lavage is a kind of bronchoscopic treatment, which is a non-invasive operation. We use local anesthesia, which eliminates the worry of the family about the possible damage to the child’s brain caused by general anesthesia and whether it will wake up, and is more economical compared to general anesthesia! We have been performing this technique for more than 4 years, and nearly 1,000 children have confirmed the safety and remarkable efficacy of the operation. At the same time, we remind the families of children and medical staff that if a child has fever and cough for more than 1 week and anti-infective treatment is not effective, they must pay attention to the symmetry of breath sounds and take chest X-ray in time so that lobar pneumonia can be diagnosed and treated early!
