The aim of basic periodontal treatment is to eliminate pathogenic factors and control inflammation, and some people call this phase etiologic treatment. It includes self-control of plaque, correct and effective brushing, supragingival scaling (scaling), subgingival scaling, root planing, occlusal adjustment to eliminate occlusal trauma, periodontal splinting of loose teeth, and extraction of affected teeth with no retention value. There are two main methods of treatment: the ultrasonic instrumentation method, which removes the irritant mainly by vibration of the ultrasonic head, and the manual instrumentation method, which removes the irritant by special instruments. Some patients believe that periodontal treatment is long, with many visits and time constraints, and are reluctant to make multiple visits, hoping for simple medication, which is wrong. For periodontitis, medication can only play an auxiliary role, while the complete removal of plaque and tartar is the most important.
