When is the infant surge period

The relatively rapid growth rate within the first 3 months of life is known as the infant’s surge period. The infant gains about 12.5 cm in length in the first 3 months and usually weighs twice as much as at birth, which is the sum of the growth in the last 9 months. During this period, the infant’s main task is to eat and sleep, and then eat again after waking up. The gradual and rapid increase in the amount of milk consumed, and the low activity level and sufficient sleep time lead to a rapid progression of their weight and height. At the same time, within 3 months of age, infants have rapid development of vision and hearing, and both eyes can follow a walking person to turn 180 degrees and can determine the source of sound. Therefore, infants during this period need to ensure the intake of adequate nutrition and sufficient sleep time to ensure healthy physical growth. If the infant’s sleep is significantly reduced during this period, the infant should be aware of the possibility of insufficient milk intake or calcium deficiency. Parents must identify the cause of their sleep deprivation and ensure that they are eating adequate amounts of milk and taking continuous vitamin AD supplements to prevent calcium deficiency.
