How to treat myopia in adolescents with Chinese medicine?

According to a research project conducted by China, the United States and Australia to prevent and control myopia in children, the prevalence of myopia among Chinese youth is as high as 50%-60%, and the number of myopic eyes in the country is nearly 400 million! The research report of Chu Renyuan, director of the key laboratory of myopia of the Ministry of Health and professor of ophthalmology of Fudan University, confirms that in recent years, the myopia rate in China has a tendency to increase sharply. Currently, the incidence of myopia in China’s population is 33%, which is 1.5 times the world average of 22%. The myopia rate of Chinese students ranks second in the world, after Singapore, with 28% of elementary school students, 60% of middle school students and 85% of high school students. For parents, children who do not wear glasses after myopia will not be able to see the blackboard, inattentive, so that academic performance decline, after wearing glasses, active children, if accidentally broken glasses, the lighter eye is zapped, the more serious lead to blindness. Rainy days, winter, with glasses in and out of the lens anti-frost. There are great restrictions on the choice of profession and employment when going to university ……. Many parents are worried about this. Some parents think that their children are nearsighted, they can wear glasses, or grow up to do surgery on it, so they let it go, as soon as they find out that their children are nearsighted, they start to let them wear glasses, the degree of long also think it is normal. However, due to the modern trend of children’s learning tasks increasing year by year, children with myopia in elementary school or even kindergarten have a very rapid increase in the number of degrees, almost every year there is an increase of one or two hundred degrees, not even to high school has developed into more than six hundred degrees of high myopia, and caused a series of fundus pathology, then, parents began to be nervous. Some parents also realize the seriousness of the problem just after they discover their child’s myopia. However, parents feel infinitely confused in the face of numerous treatment methods. Since, the adolescent body is in the growth and development period, the development of the eye changes greatly, and treatment such as laser surgery is not possible, in addition, the existence of many problems such as side effects of Western medicine, many parents first consider Chinese medicine methods for treatment. What is the role of TCM in the treatment of myopia in adolescents? There are still more methods of treatment for myopia in Chinese medicine, and many regular Chinese ophthalmology hospitals have carried out treatments for myopia in adolescents, such as simple acupuncture, plum blossom acupuncture, electric plum blossom acupuncture, auricular point pressure bean, massage, acupuncture point compressing, moxibustion, and Chinese medicine tonics. We can be sure that these Chinese medical methods do have a therapeutic effect on adolescent myopia, especially for regulatory myopia, which is often referred to as pseudomyopia. Although, some people believe that pseudomyopia will heal without treatment, we need to realize that many true myopia develops from pre-pseudomyopia, and without timely intervention and treatment for pseudomyopia, it can easily develop into true myopia. Moreover, in the case of mixed myopia, which has both pseudomyopia and true myopia components, treatment can quickly relieve visual fatigue and delay or even stop the further growth of true myopia. This is also the core purpose of these treatments. Take acupuncture as an example, after acupuncture treatment, the eye meridians and blood are harmonized and local microcirculation is improved, thus relieving the ciliary muscle tension and eliminating visual fatigue and pseudomyopia. Plummer’s needle buckling, electric plummer’s needle, and auricular pressure beans are all therapies that utilize their respective treatment pathways and theories in order to have similar effects. So, should we give up treatment for these children who are already two or three degrees or more, especially after a rigorous dilated eye exam that has no pseudomyopia component and is completely true myopia? The answer is “do not give up treatment”. The reason is that teenagers, especially primary and secondary school students, study very hard every day and spend a lot of time reading, watching computers and other close reading, and their eyes are in a state of long-term fatigue, and as they grow older until they go to university, the strain of studying increases, so we see so many children with rapid growth in prescription year by year. If you give up treatment at this time, especially in urban children’s life, learning environment factors for the development of the eyes is very serious, then by the time the child grows up, the age of university, myopia is easy to break through to six hundred degrees of high myopia category. Therefore, it is recommended that effective intervention and treatment be provided for this group of adolescents. For this group of adolescents, the aim of treatment is to actively alleviate the visual fatigue and delay the increase in the number of degrees. In addition to daily life adjustments such as watching less TV, correct reading and writing posture, reasonable rest, diet, etc., the treatment methods should actively use stronger treatment methods such as acupuncture and plum blossom acupuncture. At present, there are many clinics and institutions in the market for the treatment of youth myopia, parents are advised to choose carefully, and it is best to go to a regular medical institution such as a hospital for related treatment to prevent the increase of myopia in children due to ineffective treatment delaying the best time for treatment.
