Can a “high pillow” really be “worry-free”?

  The so-called high pillow, refers to the pillow high to sleep, carefree. But, “high pillow” can really “worry-free”?  Previously, the folklore circulated “high pillow worry-free” said, the public will think that this is scientific knowledge of sleep. However, from a large number of clinical cases prove that too high pillow will damage your cervical spine. There was such a female patient, age 35, the day before the onset of low work for a long time, the next morning there was stiffness in the neck and shoulder muscles, pain, and head rotation disorders, because the patient has been similar symptoms many times, and cervical spine X-ray shows that the cervical spine physiological curvature straightening, so come to our rehabilitation department for treatment. After asking the patient about his medical history, he learned that the patient not only often worked with his head down, but also used to sleep with a high pillow. While providing rehabilitation treatment to the patient, as a doctor, I made a missionary to the patient, focusing on the pillow “pillow” of learning.  In fact, the height of the pillow is very careful. The pillow is too high, when people sleep, the cervical spine will undoubtedly be cushioned, the result will make the person’s cervical spine, thoracic spine, lumbar spine can not be in a straight line. Long time pillow high pillow so that the cervical spine for a long time in a state of flexion, easy to neck muscle and ligament overload, can cause strain injury, and can cause the physiological curvature of the cervical spine to change in the opposite direction, resulting in neck injury. And high pillow makes the head forward flexion, uneven internal stress of the intervertebral disc, and increase the stress of the lower cervical spine, can make the cervical spine small joints and muscles lose mechanical balance, there is a possibility of accelerating cervical degeneration. The normal cervical spine from the side, for normal physiological needs, the normal physiological curvature of the cervical spine is curved convexity forward. The normal curvature of the cervical spine can increase the elasticity of the cervical spine, reduce and cushion the shock of gravity, and prevent damage to the spinal cord and brain. The straightening of the cervical curvature may be a “precursor to cervical spondylosis”.  Then how do we choose as the main tool to maintain the normal position of the head and neck – the pillow?  The “normal” position is to maintain the physiological curve of the head and neck segment itself. This weight curve ensures the external muscle balance of the cervical spine and maintains the physiological anatomy of the cervical spinal canal.  The right pillow is important for the prevention and treatment of cervical spondylosis. First, we should change the pillow to a low pillow (pillow height to 8 ~ 10 cm is appropriate); second, the pillow should not only pillow in the head, but should promote the pillow into a pillow neck, because when the neck is supported with a pillow, the posterior cervical muscle is relaxed, so that the neck muscles get a real rest; finally, the pillow core filling should be appropriate to maintain a certain amount of hardness and elasticity. Pillows with too much elasticity are easy to cause fatigue and injury to the neck muscles. For example, we can choose a pillow with a protruding back and a low flat front. When using the protruding part of the pillow in the neck, the low flat part of the pillow under the head. This use of “pillow”, can effectively relieve the tension in the neck and shoulder muscles, the prevention and treatment of cervical spondylosis is of great benefit.  Therefore, “high pillow” is very harmful to people’s cervical spine, “high pillow” is the wrong sleeping habits, “high pillow” is bound to bring people cervical spine worries!
