Is tuberculous peritonitis serious?

Tuberculous peritonitis is a more serious disease with both tuberculous symptoms and peritonitis manifestations. Its systemic manifestations include fever and night sweats, mainly low and moderate fever, and are accompanied by anaemia, wasting, oedema and orchitis. It may also be accompanied by manifestations of peritonitis, i.e. abdominal pain, pressure pain, platysmal abdomen, and even the formation of an abdominal mass in some patients. Treatment requires prolonged use of anti-tuberculosis drugs and even surgery when complicated by intestinal obstruction, intestinal perforation and intestinal fistula. Tuberculous peritonitis is therefore one of the more serious diseases and should be treated promptly and aggressively.
