Is tuberculous peritonitis contagious?

Simple tuberculous peritonitis is not contagious because the bacilli are confined to the abdominal cavity and cannot be expelled from the body; however, patients with the disease are often accompanied by other areas of tuberculosis infection, such as open pulmonary tuberculosis and intestinal tuberculosis, which can be contagious and can be transmitted through droplets, sharing of utensils, faeces, etc. Therefore, it is important to seek prompt medical examination and to have three positive sputum or stool tests for antacid bacilli to determine if the test results are excretory and infectious.
