Can a fatty liver ultrasound tell you if it’s mild or severe?

The presence and extent of fatty liver can be determined by the echo and density of the liver on abdominal ultrasound. Fatty liver is a disease of fatty degeneration of liver cells caused by various reasons, which can be categorized into homogeneous fatty liver and inhomogeneous fatty liver. Color ultrasound is sensitive to the diagnosis of fatty liver and is often used as the first choice for fatty liver diagnosis. In mild fatty liver, abdominal ultrasound shows dense and enhanced near-field echoes, insignificant far-field echoes, clearer intrahepatic tubular structures, mildly enlarged liver, and fat infiltration between 34% and 67% in mild fatty liver; and more than 67% in severe fatty liver. For the diagnosis of fatty liver, it is recommended to consult a doctor in time for a comprehensive analysis with ultrasound and other examinations.
