What is the cause of swelling of the lower extremities?

There are many causes of lower limb swelling, which can be seen in cardiogenic oedema such as heart failure and pericarditis, nephrotic oedema such as nephrotic syndrome, and hepatogenic oedema such as liver cirrhosis. It can also be seen in conditions such as hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus and lower limb phlebitis. Also, certain medication factors, malnutrition and pregnancy can cause swelling of the lower limbs.
