Abstract: The 5-year-old child in this article came to our hospital after he ate a lot of snacks and cold drinks with other children during the autumn excursion and had a lively time. The routine blood tests and abdominal ultrasound examination did not show any significant abnormalities, so we considered that the vomiting was caused by improper diet. The child was given standardized medication for 3 days, and his vomiting symptoms were significantly relieved and his appetite was restored.
Basic information】Male, 5 years old
Type of disease】Pediatric vomiting
Hospital】Shanghai Sixth People’s Hospital
Date of consultation】October 2021
Treatment plan】Intravenous injection (glucose injection, sodium chloride injection, potassium chloride injection, vitamin B6 for injection)
Treatment Period】3 days of outpatient treatment
Effectiveness of treatment] Vomiting symptoms were significantly relieved, and diet gradually returned to normal
I. Initial consultation
The child, male, 5 years old, started to vomit frequently after returning home from the autumn trip to kindergarten, about 7-8 times within 3 hours. The stomach contents vomited were mainly snacks and cold drinks eaten during the autumn excursion. The abdominal ultrasound and routine blood tests showed no significant abnormality. Combined with the characteristics of the medical history, we considered acute pediatric vomiting caused by improper diet and over-eating.
II. Treatment
Considering that the child had vomited 7-8 times and was unable to take in water, there was a possibility of dehydration and electrolyte disorder, so the child was given intravenous injection of glucose, sodium chloride, potassium chloride and vitamin B6 for injection. At the same time, parents were instructed to keep the diet extremely simple after going home, pay attention to a light and liquid diet, and avoid spicy and stimulating, greasy and cold foods to avoid recurrence of symptoms.
III. Treatment effect
After the infusion, the child went home the same night and resumed feeding in strict accordance with the norms for feeding after vomiting, and drank some warm boiled water and some thin porridge and rice soup. On the second day of infusion treatment, the child felt more comfortable and ate some thin rice and some rotten noodles, and slowly returned to his normal diet on the third day. When he came to the clinic for follow-up, he was in a better condition in all aspects. He no longer had symptoms of stomach pain, and his appetite had basically returned to the usual state.
IV. Notes
We are glad that the child recovered from the disease after treatment. However, it is necessary to advise the child and parents that until the condition is completely improved, a light and easy-to-digest diet should be given priority, avoiding spicy and stimulating, greasy and cold foods, so that the gastrointestinal tract can have sufficient time to recover its functions step by step. If vomiting continues to worsen and abdominal pain occurs, go to the hospital in time to avoid serious dehydration.
V. Personal insight
Pediatric vomiting is a common clinical symptom of gastrointestinal tract discomfort, mostly caused by cold abdomen or unclean diet. Therefore, parents should be reminded that the gastrointestinal tract of children is not fully functional, and stimulating food or strenuous exercise may cause vomiting in children, so extra attention should be paid to avoid allowing children to eat stimulating food and avoid eating immediately after strenuous exercise to avoid vomiting.
