Cold and fever mostly belong to wind-heat type cold, which is a clinical symptom of wind-heat evil attacking the body’s muscular surface and lung health. We need to use drugs to relieve the symptoms and clear the heat. Commonly used formulas are Sang Ju Drink and Yin Qiao San. Mulberry-Chrysanthemum Drink consists of mulberry leaves, chrysanthemum flowers, almonds, forsythia, peppermint, orris, licorice, and reed root. It is mainly used for the initial onset of wind-heat colds with clinical manifestations such as body heat, cough, slight thirst, thin white tongue coating and floating pulse. The main effect is to remove wind and heat, promote lung circulation and relieve cough. If the cough is more frequent, add Scutellaria baicalensis; if the cough is yellow and sputum is thick, add Psidium guajava, Scutellaria baicalensis, Morinda citrifolia and Phellodendron; if the cough is bloody, add Radix et Rhizoma alba, Radix et Rhizoma cyperus and Salviae Miltiorrhizae; if the thirst is severe, add Rhizoma smallpox; if the throat is sore due to heat, add Radix et Rhizoma Ginseng and Radix Panax notoginseng. Yin Qiao San is composed of forsythia, silver flower, orris, peppermint, light bamboo leaf, raw licorice, thorny mustard spike, tempeh, burdock and rhizome. It is mainly used for the first manifestation of superficial heat in warm diseases. Clinical manifestations include fever, slight evil wind-cold, no sweating or poor sweating, headache and thirst, cough and sore throat, red tongue, thin white or thin yellow fur, and floating pulse. Main effects: Pungent, cool and clear the surface, clear heat and detoxify the toxin. Adding and subtracting for identification of symptoms: for severe injury to fluid, add smallpox powder; for more severe heat toxicity, add horse chestnut and genistein; for heat injury to blood circulation, remove thorns and black bean curd, add white foxglove, cypress and gardenia; for rebellion of lung qi, add almond; for concurrent filth, add patchouli and yujin. The two formulas are both pungent and cooling, with the same composition of orris, forsythia, peppermint, rhizome and licorice. The difference is that Yin Qiao San has a strong power to remove heat from the surface and is a pungent-cooling and pinging agent, while Sang Ju Drink has a strong power to purge the lung and stop coughing and is a pungent-cooling and light agent.
